- Tennis Block Party on June 7, 2008.
The Albany Tennis Association, in conjunction with USTA, sponsored a Tennis Block Party on June 7, 2008. We were allowed to utilize the Darton College Tennis Facility courts and more than 90 attendees helped fill most of the courts and the instructors.
This year the main focus was on a “new” USTA program named QUICKSTART. This program is a push to get children as young as 5 years of age to start playing. The children are taught to play on smaller courts using foam or decompressed tennis balls and smaller racquets. The idea is to have them “grow” into tennis and go from QuickStart into the juniors program and proceed to playing on high school teams.
The lead instructor on this day was Becky Williams with help from Cathy Revell and Julie Sellers. Another lead instructor, Suzanne Davis, is the Director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Albany with Kellie Walsh assisting.
It is impossible to present a program such as the Block Party to the community of Albany and surrounding areas without the help of volunteers. We are grateful to Flint Beverage for their donation of water, on premise volunteers Kay Ragan, Jane Adams, Gail Korpal, Bobbie Mahon, Gemma Kummerer, Stephanie Hawke, and Wendy Feagans, our photographer.
We, the Albany Tennis Association, would like to have your suggestions and ideas on how to improve and grow tennis in our area. You may email albanytennis@aol.com with your suggestions. We also opened the clinics up to juniors as well as adults with instruction given by Rick Crutcher and John Scanling with assistance from Scott and Katy Boese, Ted Soderberg and Leigh Anne Bjerregaard.
